The island is nearly deserted, haunting, beautiful. Across a slip of ocean lies South Carolina. But for the handful of families on Yamacraw Island, America is a world away. For years the people here lived proudly from the sea, but now its waters are not safe. Waste from industry threatens their very existence, unless, somehow, they can learn a new life. But they will learn nothing without someone to teach them, and their school has no teacher.

Well, I haven't tried a talking book for a while, found it too distracting while driving. Thought I would check one out and give it a go while falling asleep. My husband doesn't read too many books, he's a newspaper reader, and he doesn't like fiction, so I picked this one, with him in mind, even though I couldn't really tell what it was about by reading the description. Well, it is a winner. We plugged it in, and were thoroughly enjoying it while falling asleep, but then the CD ran out. Neither one of us was awake enough to go and put in the second one. In the morning, after the trip to the outhouse, (at the cabin) I plugged in the second one, and had a nice story to listen to while lazing around in bed for a while. When it ran out, I got up, plugged in the third CD, and made some coffee. After coffee, I still wanted to listen to it, so picked up a dust rag and started dusting. (Something I usually never find the time to do!) I thought my husband was still sleeping, but when I put the CD on pause, to go get more cleaning supplies, he said, "what happened, did it run out again? Here he was a listening away! This book has a lot of big words in it, and I know for a fact, would not be one that he would stick with if he was reading it, but he was sure enjoying it being read to him. I ended up getting a whole pile of really boring little cleaning jobs done that morning, that would never have been done if I had stuck my nose in my book. This story is so well done, and so interesting, funny/sad and thought provoking. I am so glad I picked it, and I will be looking for other stories and books from this author. In the meantime, I have found a way to discuss books with my husband, that I know I could never get him to plow through, if he had to read them! What a gift!.......July 27, spent a nice morning cooking breakfast outside at the cabin, and listening to the last disc. Great story, Pat seems to be one of those one in a million teachers, who really puts himself out there for his kids. We need more men and women like this, but look what happens when you stick your neck out! Politics ruins everything it seems, where is our common sense?
Nov 22 2013.....just watched the movie, a little sugary, (everyone is soooo clean and neat!) but then what do I expect from a "Hallmark" production? Worth the wait, tho.
