Gavin is on the ledge. Hollis, who just learned that he is not the biological father of his children, has the task of talking Gavin down. Gavin reveals his deep-rooted conflict with his fundamentalist Christian neighbor Joe, whose theological opposition to Gavin was intensified by Gavin's gay roommate and later by Joe's wife's infidelity. The negotiations take a dramatic turn when Hollis learns that Gavin has a deadline, and his life is not the only one hanging in the balance.

Disappointing. Forced. Terrible scripting. Caricatures of characters. Almost nothing in this movie rang true. Overacting by Charlie Hunnan, and lack of acting by Liv Tyler. Terrence Howard was good (as usual) but his character's back story wasn't the least bit believable either. I had more empathy for the "bad" preacher husband (well played by Patrick Wilson) than the insipid, cartoonish lovers. Did Gavin change his mind about the existence of an afterlife when facing death? Who knows. Who cares. He never had to die in the first place. Stupid premise.

a very good movie--i've watched it twice. The conflict seems real-I got into it so much, I felt bad for the unbeliever and the preacher's wife. I am a Christian and I believe the preacher failed the ultimate test: to love unconditionally. I guess the woman married him for the wrong reasons, mainly gratitude. So believers can be bad people; unbelievers can be good people. Is anyone surprized?

Sad ending.

I loved this movie! I found the 4 main characters well developed, not simply "good guys" or "bad guys". Suspenseful up to the end. Definitely recommend!

Believe the negative comments on this movie. Not worth watching.

An intelligent thriller with sharp dialogue and a philosophical twist. The four lead roles -- it's almost an ensemble piece -- are compelling and the actors give solid performances. A solid script, well-shot and neatly edited. But the movie crosses a few genres and doesn't conform to the usual stereotypes. So, it gets mixed reactions, like some of the ones below.

Agreed that Charlie Hunnam was not at his best but overall the movie was not that bad. It pulled me in and I remained engaged throughout. Good ending with Terence Howard's character. Stayed with me for a while.

Almost from the beginning I could not believe - I could not suspend my disbelief - that these idiots were conducting themselves the way they did. Wooden acting, by already washed-up D-grade actors, flat, one-dimensional characters, badly written, tiresome in both the stupidity of the characters and the plot, pathetic in it's attempt at some kind of message, story or meaning. Not entertaining or enlightening - utter WASTE OF TIME.
This movie is a PIECE OF CRAP. Red State is a far better depiction of the Religous-Delusion-Meets-Rationality and it contains an excellent political commentary as well plus with Red State is was possible for me to suspend my disbelief.

I agree with others comments below - the film was "a bit off", and "one sided" (anti-Christian). Four characters: Joe, the domineering, unstable "Born Again" who's a fanatic about his FAITH; Gavin, the smug and damaged atheist homewrecker who's FAITHless; Shana, the fragile and misguided 'prize' for one of the two idiots above, who's unFAITHful; and Detective Hollis, the FAITHful family man who's losing his FAITH because HIS wife was unFAITHful. The whole premise felt forced... the dialogue - contrived. I thought Charlie Hunnam's acting as Gavin was flat and underwhelming (if not poor). He smirked when describing his daughter's violent death to Shana. Smirked! And not a HINT of emotion/panic from him the entire time he's facing his own death. Nothing. Simply nonchalantly shooting the breeze with the cop... Terence Howard, Patrick Wilson, and Liv Tyler, however, were very good. Actually, the best part of this movie (for me) was Liv Tyler's "sexy mouth" (etc.) :)
