"Before Lisbeth Salander, there was Kathy Mallory. The astonishing new Mallory novel from the New York Times-bestselling author. The little girl appeared in Central Park: red-haired, blue-eyed, smiling, perfect-except for the blood on her shoulder. It fell from the sky, she said, while she was looking for her uncle, who turned into a tree. Poor child, people thought. And then they found the body in the tree. For Mallory, newly returned to the Special Crimes Unit after three months' lost time, there is something about the girl that she understands. Mallory is damaged, they say, but she can tell a kindred spirit. And this one will lead her to a story of extraordinary crimes: murders stretching back fifteen years, blackmail and complicity and a particular cruelty that only someone with Mallory's history could fully recognize. In the next few weeks, she will deal with them... all in her own way. "-- Provided by publisher.

A very strange book. I am not sure I would read her again. "R" for gore .

I've read the Mallory series since the very beginning in the 90's. O'Connell doesn't disappoint in this newest installment of Mallory. If anything, her writing is even sharper and tighter. She's an intelligent writer, which makes the books all that much better. This was one of my favorites - the last two weren't quite as good in my opinion, but Chalk Girl is a great read. I couldn't put it down.

Another winner in this series. Sometimes it's like watching a train crash through your fingers as you follow Mallory through the investigation of a case...there WILL be carnage. But you have to keep reading, to find out who-dun-it & who survives. Always a smart & intricately plotted thriller.

Mallory of the Special Forces Crime Unit deals with crime in her own way. Good story, interesting characters

Amazing! Mallory is in fine form. My only complaint is that there's always so long between the books that I feel as if I've missed something.
Time to start at the beginning again :)

Loved this, as I have all of O'Connell's novel. Wish she was a tad more prolific, though. A book I'd highly recommend.

O'Connell has crafted another tight, complex thriller featuring one of the most original and compelling protagonists to come along in years. More, please!

Have been a fan of Ms. O'Connell and her protagonist, Kathy Mallory from the very beginning. Each successive novel is better than the last. I can't wait for the next one. Now if only someone in Hollywood would turn these books into a movie. Problem would be who could play the character of Mallory and do it justice. Good read from first to last page.
