Set in Saudi sands, this book explores the official and unofficial culture of the wealthy country during the height of its oil profiteering. I appreciated the protagonist's POV as a mother, wife, and ex-pat so far removed from her Texas home that she no longer relates to the place.

An enlightening peek into life in the Arab world, the story is told from alternating perspectives of the four main characters. Parssinen accurately conveys the lasting nature of true love, despite times when, perhaps, it is not enough to fulfill us.

If this had not been a local author, I don't think it would have been chosen as the One Read.

How would you feel and what would you do if, after giving up your culture and your country, you found out your husband had legally taken a second wife? This is the dilemma that faces Rosalie in her 27th year of marriage to a Saudi man. His choice puts their entire family in crisis, and each individual responds in a different way. An interesting novel.

It didn't seem fair, really, that all she had to do was stand there and, through her nakedness, make him a slave.
