Steve Coogan should be the best-know British comedian in the States. If you enjoy British comedy because it doesn't always stop before reaching the edge, reserve it immediately.

Alan Partridge is to chat shows what David Brent is to regional business managers. The difference is that Alan has no redeeming features. When this was broadcast in the early 90s, the BBC received complaints from viewers who didn't know it wasn't real.

The character comes from a spoof current affairs radio show called On the Hour. (Typical headlines included Headmaster sacked for using big-faced boy as satellite dish.) This was adapted to TV as The Day Today, introducing us to the Holy Trinity of comedy - Armando Iannucci (In The Loop and The Thick of It, the latter loosely adapted as Veep in the US. Chris Morris gave the world Jam, Brass Eye (Trey Parker's all time favourite comedy) and most recently, Four Lions - a comedy about a cell of suicide bombers in the North of England.

The Colbert Report and the Daily Show wouldn't be the same without these shows.

The Thick of It gave us Malcolm Tucker (think Rahm Emanuel, only Scottish and more aggressive). To paraphrase him - you need to see these ASAFP.
