Gail Simmons obviously loves her job. Even after years working in the culinary industry, she remains in awe of food, displaying a love for it so powerful that the reader can't help but fall under its spell. "Talking With My Mouth Full" may not contain the best technical writing but Simmons certainly shows off her talents as a story-teller, which more than make up for some awkward lists and phrasing.

Simmons knew she wanted to write about food and she put a huge amount of work into making her dreams a reality. She went to culinary school and worked in some very prestigious New York kitchens; she worked with Jeffrey Steingarten, the venerable food writer for Vogue, and Daniel Bouloud; she found her way to Food & Wine and, finally onto Top Chef. She modestly attributes most of her success to luck but, in truth, she let her passion lead her and she put real effort into her success.

Throughout the book, we get enlightening glimpses into Gail's life, the inner workings of restaurants, and behind the scenes information about how Top Chef is made. Finally, we hear her first-hand experience of how hard it is to be a female chef in an industry that is overwhelmingly male.

This is a quick, easy, and entertaining read. There are no heartbreaking confessions or mortifying divulging. This autobiography is light, airy, and sweet like a Pavlova. And sometimes a Pavlova really hits the spot.
