A grim, post-apocalyptic tale with a powerful twist in the telling. A man awakens after spending some period of time in stasis to a world that is both hostile and confusing. His memory is gone, and so is the use of his legs. He finds himself on some sort of mission, being carried by two nearly identical men who are slowly dying from the poisonous environment that somehow does not affect him. And worse, is everything that he has been told a lie?

This quick read is harsh, compelling, and frustrating in a good way. Brian Evenson has crafted a dark dystopian tale that is sure to please fans of the genre.

Josef Horkai has been awoken from storage after thirty years to aid the community. Only he can safely venture forth into the ruined landscape, and return with an item could mean the future of humanity. Evenson weaves a carefully constructed tale of a dystopian future where trust is a rare commodity and answers are a thing of the past. I was immediately drawn into Evenson's novel, and couldn't wait each day to get back to this book.
