If I told you this 1000 page book was mostly a catalog of patrols made out of Pearl Harbor and Australia by US subs, you'd say "how boring". But it was very absorbing and I finished it. The US forces had to develop a strategy for attacking Japanese shipping, convince a rigid bureaucracy to overcome faulty torpedoes and survive the cramped, claustrophobic patrols. And no matter how many times I read a sentence like "...the Grunion was never heard from again..." it was always chilling.
