This book was not made for everyone. Personally, I loved the author's flagrant use of "truth" and "lies". The brutal honesty throughout may appear condescending to some, but it spoke to my sensibilities.

A self-help book like only Augusten Burroughs could write- funny, dry, self-depricating and at the same time self-aggrandizing, and still oddly touching. The author's voice comes through clearly and he does offer some thought provoking advice. A nice commentary on the genre without being overly critical.

a guide to subverting our common tropes dealing with the deep questions that plague us all. this is a thing of beauty, and undermines much of the harmful material that subverts us under the guise of self-help

This book has kind of a mild beginning. After a few pages of standard self-help, Augusten Burroughs starts laying down serious advice. Witty, inventive and stupid-simple, this book brought me to tears. An uplifting and inspirational life manual for the modern human.

Down to earth and rough. Great descriptions of how things are. He writes as a true gay man, which I am not, but he writes truth and core feelings. Fresh and much appreciated.

Fantastic book! Burroughs shares his philosophy of how he believes people should handle some of the tough stuff that we all might have to deal with in our lives. I don't necessarily agree with everything in the book but its a great resource/read for someone who tends to hold onto the troubles life throws their way.

Straight forward and it assists you if you are currently struggling through something (I was); however, if you are reading for curiousity sake, it may be a bit repetitious.

Light but direct talk about several deep subjects. Strangely uplifting.

Really good, straightforward advice. It seems so obvious after you read the book. Some of the early chapters can be a little boring if it's about a problem you don't struggle with, but you can always skip those or skim through really fast. The nice thing is that each chapter is pretty short, so it's a quick and easy read, unless you're stopping to ponder the advice (which I did occasionally) The chapters near the end are really good and insightful, about dealing with illness and death. I learned a lot about myself and how I deal with things from this book.

This is the first book of Augusten's I've read, and I was hopeful! My hopes were dashed, and the more of this book I read, the more I felt like weeping for the loss of life the trees suffered in the making of this book. I'll admit that this is the first in the genre of self help that I've read, but I still can't help but think that this book is plain awful. Onward to a better book, as any other I pick up is sure to be.

This book is missing a chapter. 'How to state your opinion or stress your point without using excessive unnecessary vulgar language.' I would not recommend to those that are sensitive to swear words.
