Roy Neary is a cable worker who, along with several other stunned bystanders, experience a close encounter of the first kind - witnessing UFOs soaring across the sky. After this life-changing event the inexplicable vision of a strange, mountain-like formation haunts him. He becomes obsessed with discovering what it represents, much to the dismay of his wife and family. Meanwhile, bizarre occurrences are happening around the world. Government agents have close encounters of the second kind - discovering physical evidence of extraterrestrial vistors in the form of a lost fighter aircraft from World War II and a stranded military ship that disappeared decades earlier only to suddenly reappear in unusual places. Roy continues to chase his vision to a remote area where he and the agents follow the clues that have drawn them to reach a site where they will have a close encounter of the third kind - contact.

Written and directed by Steven Spielberg in 1977, this American SF drama tells the story of Roy Neary, an everyday blue-collar worker in Indiana, whose life changes after an encounter with an unidentified flying object.
The visual effects appear fascinating with the otherworldly aliens.
Although the film seems slow-paced at first, the climax looks great and dreamlike.

One of my all time favorites!

Okay, this movie was… pretty stupid. Like, the main character keeps seeing this weird mountain in every mound of whatever? Seriously? I would not watch this film again, nor would I recommend it to anyone.

Very Scary!

The Mother of all space movies if you let me tell it. This movie set the standard for alien coming to earth movies. Great on so many levels. A must see!!

Here are three good reasons why I only gave this old-school, Sci-Fi picture 2 stars -

(1) The scene with Roy and the mashed potatoes (and him desperately looking around at his family at the dinner table and saying, while pointing to the mound of potatoes - "This means something.") was particularly idiotic, to say the least.

(2) It made absolutely no sense to me why these aliens would be so braindead as to actually go ahead and dump a full-sized ocean-liner into the middle of the Gobi Desert. Is that stupid, or what!? (Hello!? Now, how the heck were the humans supposed to haul a gigantic sucker like that over to the nearest ocean?)

(3) It really killed me that before the team of volunteers went so bravely ahead, parading themselves on over to the aliens' ship, that a Catholic priest was suddenly present on hand in order to give them all "god's" blessing and a bon voyage, to boot. Ha! That was a total howl, and a half!

Like, didn't director Steven Spielberg even have enough common sense to realize the sheer stupidity of including such a ridiculous "religious" scene as the likes of that into a film about aliens landing on Earth? Talk about a pack of totally clueless and misdirected nonsense to the 10th power!

I echo what Overcooked cookies said! A visually amazing movie that isnt JUST special effects, but also a great story added makes this movie a masterful work of cinema by Director Stephen Spielberg. A grand sense of awe and wonder prevails throughout the progression of this movie, and you get a sense of the situation the central character, played by Richard Dreyfuss finds himself a part of. One of the very best science fiction films out there today, and while it is no STAR WARS in it's own indominable way, it magically enwraps you, and enchants!

Thirty years on some aspects of this film have aged poorly. The human aspect of the story holds up, but the special effects aren't worth all the wait and build up to see.... a flying ice cream cone.

Should be seen by all as a historical period piece, just be prepared.

Not at all a fan of Richard Dreyfuss. This movie is not terrible, but he drives me nuts.

One of the best films I have seen in this year. It was entertaining and interesting. Great performances a must see for all. Truly a really great movie worth the long library wait or the price to rent from a Red Box. Well worth the price of admission to any theater.
