Some thematic material, and brief violent content.
Felix Bush, a Tennessee hermit, is either feared or hated by most of the people that live in the town. One day, he gets the idea to throw one big bash before he kicks the bucket. While he is still alive and kickin' he plans his very own rollicking funeral party.

Based somewhat on the exploits of Felix Bushaloo Breazeale, a real life Tennessee recluse, but padded out for theatre audiences, Aaron Schneider’s low-keyed slice of life dramedy has but a few things going for it. Robert Duvall is exceptional as the taciturn Bush who goes from grumbling loner to articulate philosopher at the drop of a shotgun shell while Sissy Spacek keeps pace as an old flame who is just finding out she never really knew the man she once loved. Bill Murray rounds out the cast as a befuddled funeral director along with Lucas Black as his too honest assistant and Bill Cobbs as a reluctant eulogist. The 1930s touches are nice too with old jalopies, dusty country streets, and a soundtrack of original music complimented by scratchy old records. But aside from being a somewhat engaging character study nothing really takes off—the anticipated climax is more lifeless than an actual wake and the ending is hardly surprising even with the last few pieces of the puzzle plopping into place. Would have been better as a short story.

This movie escaped my notice until now (2018)--almost ten years later. Doesn't matter: timeless.

Glad I found it. It would have been an "ok" movie, but the performances by a number of seasoned, gifted performers makes it even better.

Simple story--bit of a mystery, revealed at the end--simply told. Nicely understated--a welcome change from fast cuts and loud action.

Great work by all concerned--Murray, Spacek, Duvall and relative newcomer Kevin Black as the young husband, father and funeral parlour employee about to learn a whole lot of lessons about life--while in the business of death. So we learn right along with him.

Rated 5/10. Very average. I didn't find the storyline very appealing, nor the characters. If I don't care for the plot, I'm not much concerned about the acting.

You don't get to find out until the very end, as to what happened at the beginning of the movie.

Excellent movie! First rate actors and great acting. Complex story about love, loss, secrets and forgiveness. Set in the deep south, early in the 20th century. (I can't remember if the year was mentioned). I loved the old patchwork quilts, the old town, the vintage cars, costumes, Sissy Spacek's hats. Based on a true story. I enjoy watching the commentary and interviews at the end of a film. Definitely recommend this movie!

Excellent. This is my 2nd viewing in past years. Bill Murray and Robert Duvall, Lucas Black perfect in their roles. Some interesting comments in bonus features. Bill Cobbs as a reverend great too.~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Excellent film with a superb cast. While it has humorous moments, there is a serious narrative as well. Don't miss this one.

Sweet, thoughtful and superbly acted. For a simple story it had plenty of twists to hold my interest. I agree this should have received way more interest when it was released.

Excellent film, should have gotten much more attention. Duvall is superb in his role, as are the other big and small names in this movie. I may have to buy it for my own shelves!

Coarse Language: There's quite a bit of coarse language, but no violence or sexual situations. Definitely suitable for teens if the language isn't an issue. Don't recall any "f" bombs dropped. The worst I remember is son of a b____.
