True, I jumped into this mid-series, but I often found Terry Brooks' storytelling repetitive and disjointed. A bit of a shaggy dog story...as is often the case, we are nowhere at the end of the book, and need to await the next sequel for further developments. Fair enough, but I appreciate it when the author indulges me by tying up at least a few loose ends. Brooks' writing contains long descriptive passages about scenery, personalities, and battle scenes; he would do well to follow the old adage, "Show, don't tell."

This book is incredibly SLOW. One of the main characters (Aphenglow) is also incredibly STUPID. Really you have had two attempts on your life (and had to be saved both times) but you are STILL going to hide from your hired bodyguard???? She is also incredibly dishonest (although Terry Brooks tries to make her out not to be) she basically feels that her vows to anyone other then her chief druid can be broken whenever she likes.
One interesting aspect of this book is the fact that Terry Brooks has broken from the typical quest format - in the sense that you take a main character who is young and not good or evil and put them through a series of challenges to make them choose. Maybe I have to wait until book 2 to see this?

First book I ever read by Terry Brooks. I liked it a lot, already on the last book of the series.

The first in what promises to be another solid Shannara trilogy. Every time I read a Shannara book I'm tempted to re-read the whole set. I'm just that fond of them.
