From childhood, Alma has loved John Buchanan. Repressed by the pressure of a minister father and a mother who has never recovered from a nervous breakdown, she keeps these feelings bottled up. Her life becomes unbearable when John returns from medical school and takes up with the sultry Rosa, the daughter of the casino owner who is as open and willing as Alma is shy and repressed.

I haven't yet read the play, but I suspect that the film adaptation was a bit clunky (why not just film it as it was written?), since the film ended up being a little too simplistic, especially in the last 60% of it: the complexity that was set up in the beginning wasn't honored in the end. The ending was weird: a new character is introduced and gives it a happy-ish ending.

This movie is a little bit slow regarding plot development and we had a hard time finishing it. But instead of giving up, we gave it a chance. I can say, it has excellent acting especially from Geraldine Page, and it's worth a try just for that reason. If you are one of her fans, you should just watch it with some coffee in the morning, or as an afternoon matinee at home.

Geraldine Page gives a devastating performance in the role of the neurotic and frustrated Alma. There are a few clunky and dated details, but overall well worth watching.

If you liked this film version, you ought to check out Williams' revision called "Eccentricities of a Nightingale (a very young Frank Langella and Blythe Danner have the lead roles.)
