Couldn't put it down. Finished it in one sitting and felt like leaving old friends at the end. Have started putting all her others on reserve.

This first title is almost a "cozy" mystery. But the series gets deeper, darker, and more nuanced with each new title. Join Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Surete du Quebec as he journeys to the small town of Three Pines.

I really enjoyed this initial book in the series and have gone on to read the rest as I can get them from the library - they are popular! I find the plots not always great and the characters not always consistent, but the little town of Three Pines and the way of life is enchanting and relaxing and brings me back to the series.

I listened to the audio version of this book and it was excellent. I really enjoyed the characters and the mystery, which kept me guessing the whole time. My favorite character is Myrna. I liked how the author tied the story to the title of the book during the wrap up. I'm looking forward to the next in the series.

This book is a lot of fun and the definition of a page turner! I flew threw the last 2/3 of it in one day and it threw quite a few plot twists at me. Would recommend for someone looking for something an afternoon of entertainment and escapism.

My first Penny novel (after reading 17 Robinson novels with Alan Banks) featuring Armand Gamache, a refreshing change with him being respectful, intelligent and perceptive yet firm when needed. His has with him his very able assistant Beauvoir and the novice agent Nichol that he is trying to mentor, perhaps unsuccessfully at this stage.
This first novel is a reasonably good page turner with a plausible yet not overly complicated plot, a few unexpected twists and turns but overall an enjoyable slower paced read. A solid good first novel and I look forward to the next one in the series.

First novel in The Inspector Armand Gamache series, this character-driven story introduces the residents of an English-speaking enclave in the mountains of Quebec. Like life in the village of Three Pines, this story develops at a leisurely pace with characters you want to get to know. The murder mystery is complex enough that readers will not easily figure out whodunit.

The plot was somewhat implausible. Good airplane book.

The development of the suspects was so subtle that I was surprised how much I like the story. I like the fact that some of the characters had a sense of humor.
