Michael Wood tells the story of one place, the village of Kibworth, Leicestershire, throughout the whole of English history. Located in the very heart of England, Kibworth has lived through the Black Death, the Civil War and the Industrial Revolution, and was even bombed in World War II. With the help of the local people and using archaeology, landscape, language and DNA, Michael Wood uncovers the lost history of this village from the Roman era to the present day.

Once again Michael Wood infuses his enthusiasm and ability to relate what was happening in human terms to history, this time to the history of England from the Romans to the present. The project heavily involves the people of Kibworth and has their school children measuring fields and digging sample pits to find Roman pottery and coins in their backyards and common areas. While not his most interesting or best work (In Search of the Trojan War is his most brilliant), this series is inspiring nonetheless for an alternative way to make history more accessible.

Highly recommended for an exciting and imaginative overview of English history. Would appeal to thoughtful teens.

By far the best series on the history of England. Other series focus on the big figures (kings, lords, bishops, etc). But this one was concerned with the history of real down-to-earth people. The archeology digs in a real English town really brought the story together.

I found the earlier episodes to be better done but one should watch the entire thing.

I wish someone would do a series like this on America's history. Maybe they could use Howard Zinn's book as a screen play?

Bottom Line: Enjoy!

Michael Wood has given us a fascinating adventure through local history. This is a most engaging journey that clarifies and humanizes the English story and character.
