Fantastic introduction and guidebook for anyone wondering about growing grain in a home/small farm environment. The author clearly loves her subject and has deftly written technical information with easy-to-read how tos, recipes, and farmer sidebar stories. She walks you through understanding barley, buckwheat, corn (recommended for first-timers due to its cultural familiarity), the re-emerging heirloom grains (amaranth, quinoa, spelt, emmer farro, einkorn), millet, oats, rice (alas, not suitable for the Pacific NW but possible in sunny CA or the deep South), rye, and wheat. Daunted by the idea of growing your own? No worries, she provides tips on where to find organic or already ground grains, including freshness tips. I especially liked the Resources section for further research. If you like The Northwest Herb Lover's Handbook, by Mary Preus, this book is very similar in scope and quality.

A great resource for growing, harvesting, and using grains. Combine it with the "Square Foot Gardening" and you can't loose. Well written and meticulously researched.
