Daphne has already defied custom and rejected her arranged marriage, by being voluntarily “ruined” by the dashing Norris. Despite the quick one-nighter, they can’t stop thinking about each other. Norris returns to find Daphne struggling to manage a plundered estate. After a neighbour lures her into a trap and beats her, hoping a forced marriage will improve his situation, Norris demands that Daphne leaves under his protection. Conditions are more flush at Dunrobin Castle, but whispering gossips and a scheming competitor for Norris’ affection keep the pages flying in this steamy Scottish story. In an aside, I loved the dedicated falcons that deliver urgent messages.
