" ' The eclecticism of Reed's themes and preoccupations is such that at times they can seem prescient.' " " ' Probably Reed's most famous treatment of gender alienation is the much-anthologized and controversial SONGS OF WAR, in which the women simply decamp to the hills and set up their own society.' " " 'The fantastic has been such a persistent strain in American writing, from Hawthorne and Poe and Melville through Twain and L. Frank Baum up to H. P. Lovecraft and Robert A. Heinlein.' " " She spoke, and so complete was my transformation that I understood her. 'Where's Richard?' Because I was afraid to try my voice, I answered her with a shrug. ' You must be one of his thousand cousins.' I nodded. I was somehow comforted by her phrase; I had always take humans to be isolated, and it made me feel somehow secure to know that their families were as big as ours." " I was conditioned to march on, like Pavlov's dogs or the chicken that dances on the electrified turntable, like soft-shoe like crazy to keep from getting shocked."

These stories were not a real invite into different cultures as portrayed nor well written so that they'd be memorable in how profound any of them were. Perhaps it is simply not of any culture i have understanding but as i do read a plethora of different cultures, feel that this could have been polished up quite a bit more before publishing and that it was missing something important from each story.
