The year is 1805 and Europe has fallen to Napoleon. The Royal Navy is the only thing standing in his way to total victory. Off the coast of South America, a new conflict is brewing. Captain Jack 'Lucky Jack' Aubrey and his Man-of-War HMS Surprise is under orders to sink or capture the French privateer Acheron, which has been deployed to the region. After seven weeks of uneventful sailing, the Acheron strikes first, all but crippling the Surprise in an engagement in which Aubrey realizes his enemy's ship is nautically superior to his own. Along with his close friend and confidant, ship's surgeon Stephan Maturin, Aubrey is now faced with the choice of retreating to England and admitting defeat or remaining at the Acheron's mercy. Aubrey must now do the impossible if he is to survive, repair his ship, catch up to his enemy and defeat the Acheron.

Russell Crowe at his man’s man best. Appearing very comfortable in this role Crowe plays it a bit subdued and lets the ship be center stage. Not really an action film it is a bit slow at times but not tedious if you enjoy historical pics.

Do you want a healthy fear of the open ocean? Nightmares about being caught in a sea storm?

Well, then this one's for you!

My only criticism is there are a few points where I got confused by the passage of time. However, this is a well made film that delivers on a lot of subplots as well as the main story. The final sea battle was exciting and I audibly cheered or gasped as it unfolded.

GREAT 2003 seafaring adventure film with fab cinematography and terrific performances by Russell Crowe and others.
I did watch it with English closed captions which made it easier to understand some of the rough seafaring diction...

I saw this film when it first came out, but had been put off by the difficult to understand dialogue. I recently read a book in the series and enjoyed it immensely, so I wanted to revisit the film. I'm glad I took the time.

An expansive cinematic achievement that sits well against such adventure classics as Lawrence of Arabia, and is a sure bet for fans of ocean bound drama.

I loved this movie. Great directing and photography, acting and story line. I've watched it several times and enjoy it thoroughly each time. Crowe is great in his role, it's perfectly suited to him. I really enjoyed the friendship between the captain and the doctor but didn't like when they started arguing. Watching people arguing on a film is just plain annoying. Highly recommended.

I watched this movie years ago when the DVD was just released. I watched it this time to see Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany's acting. While some of the story may be a little far fetched,(how can one ship suffer so much damage and still stay afloat, especially around Cape Horn?) I still enjoyed the film; get the Phantom, the chase, the intrigue, the camouflage; the development of characters which was phenomenal. A movie well worth watching again.

Disappointing, hard to understand dialogue. As a Navy veteran i was interested in the shipboard terminology. The ship took lots of cannon ball hits yet stayed afloat. Lots of hand to hand combat. Interesting to see young boys in uniform learning to be sailors and junior officers. Produced by famous son Samuel Goldwyn Jr.

A fairly well done and entertaining sea yarn.
