great insight into Chinese culture the third some fighting to better himself in America through an higher education

The early part of the novel was very good reading - I learned a lot about the Taiwan's history, while enjoying the story. Loved the character.
The part in the US was interesting when the story was related to Taiwan, but the author mostly lost me there.
