From Library Staff

Directed by Shinichiro Watanabe! Kaoru was an honor roll student who tended to keep to himself but meeting notorious bad boy Sentaro Kawabuchi starts to change him. Through his devil-may-care classmate, Kaoru learns the attractions of jazz and finds the first person he can call a “friend”.

One of the best anime you can watch. Based in 1966 this series is about a group of teens who love jazz. That description does not do the series justice. It is a multilayered drama that brings up topics idiosyncratic to Late 1960's Japan such as the student riots at that time and the growing fracture between the post war generation and those that still retained traditional customs and beliefs. Elements of religion (Christianity) and the life and cultural difference between the urban life of Tokyo and life on Kyushu are brought up along with taboo subjects such as interracial relationships, racism, family separation and divorce. There is a lot to take in and absorb and the series mirrors the disjointed but beautiful jazz music it celebrates throughout.

This is a great example of the new genre of "romance for men." That is, love stories told from the perspective of the male character. Unique themes in this genre include: what it means to be a big brother, the ways men communicate friendship differently than women, and the despair of "every time I try to do good, it turns out bad." Asia is taking the lead in this genre, with movies such as "Love Fiction" from South Korea.
