A towering figure in the formative years of the American nation, John Quincy Adams was the only son of a Founding Father president to become president himself, and the first one to serve in Congress after his term. Pushed by his parents to climb to the heights of their ambitions, Adams surpassed their expectations, not only as president, but also as an ambassador, a powerful voice before the Supreme Court, a fearless secretary of state, and America's first champion of human rights.

A very sympathetic and favorable portrait of a lifelong politician early in American independent history. I got the feeling that embarrassing aspects about him were downplayed or even omitted, but as I am ignorant, I cannot make the accusation. His extraordinary efforts at self-study really paid off, but were anyone to do anything similar today, they would I fear be scoffed and chuckled at. Most admirable was the exercise of his own independent judgement, and his continued work after he left the office of the Presidency.

John Quincy’s life in the last disc is fantastic. Get this, and if you do nothing else, listen to the last disc (which is less than an hour).

The first half of the book is more about his father, John Adams, than John Quincy. I will admit, kinda hard to write the life story of John Quincy without mentioning his dad, but it seemed to me that it was way too much about his though the author was trying to stretch the story out. Thus, the second half was much better.
