Like most everyone, I saw the great Molly Ringwald/John Hughes trilogy of the 80s, but somehow missed this one in the Ringwald canon. It's an amusing, but slight romantic comedy that pairs Ringwald with Robert Downey, Jr. in his first leading role. I believe he was in "Less than Zero" the same year. Ringwald and Downey, at his most gregarious and hyper-kinetic, don't have a lot of chemistry and sometimes seem as if they're in different movies. The pop 80s vibe is somewhat undermined by tough guy Harvey Keitel (who starred in writer/director James Toback's "Fingers") and madman Dennis Hopper, who plays a drunk. So Molly Ringwald had fathers played by both Hopper and Harry Dean Stanton ("Pretty in Pink"). The plot is pretty inane, but if you're completing your 80s movie checklist, this is a good one. Look for Vanessa Williams and Lorraine Bracco in small roles. Toback would direct Downey again in "Two Girls and a Guy" and "Black and White."

Twenty minutes into this movie, I asked my wife, "Is this movie making any sense to you?" She shook her head. Fifty minutes later and it made even less sense. By the way, if your father is being held by gangsters and you actually like the guy, it is not time for a cheeseburger!

Very good 80's rom-com. Doesn't follow the usual b.s. cliche rom-com formula. Some memorable scenes. Downey Jr has quite a few great lines. Ringwald looks good and plays a very different sort of female lead in a rom-com. Decent story. Probably more for Robert Downey Jr and/or Molly Ringwald fans. Like me.
