A sequel that not only lives up to its predecessor, it might even improve on it. Wonderful complexity of character, relationships, setting, myth, magic, and language, with a story that is thrilling and an atmosphere that's alluring. It's both rich and accessible. I don't know why I waited so long to read it, only now I'm glad I did because the third book came in for me at the library a mere couple of hours after I finished this one. I'll be starting it immediately following my posting of this review during my commute home.

Will Patton's audiobook reading, by the way, is a magnificent match for this series. He reads with understated, natural accent and voice distinctions between the characters and just the right amount of grit and edge to deepen the book's tone. Listening to him is a pleasure.

So excited that Maggie Stiefvater is coming to Johnson County on November 10! The reader is perfect for the characters and the mystical plot.

I equate this sequel to the movie version of The Tale of Despereaux that focused on Roscuro. Why? Ronan is not endearing enough a character to carry an entire novel. The only moments of complete engagement were when Blue was involved in the plot. Over the course of 439 pages or 11 audio discs those moments are few and far between. I sense the next novel in this series will get back to the goods of the ensuing love of Blue and Gansey.
