Hiking on a solo vacation in a remote, uninhabitable region of Arizona, Anderegg happened upon Riley, an emaciated puppy clinging to life at the bottom of a 350-foot canyon. For much of Anderegg's childhood, he was at the bottom of a veritable canyon himself-- a canyon whose imprisoning depth and darkness was created by bullies who just wouldn't quit and parents who weren't capable of love. Riley had three shotgun pellets embedded beneath his skin, teeth turned permanently black from malnutrition. In rescuing him, Anderegg was conquering the currents of cruelty that swelled beneath his own life and always threatened to drown him.

I highly recommend this book. It is a touching story of an abused boy, now and adult, who, while in the process of rescuing an abused dog, deals with his own painful memories of abuse and bullying. In his attempts to save an animal's life he explores the underlying reasons for and results of bullying, in a child's life. I couldn't put it down.

Initially I wasn't sure how I would feel about this book. I was interested in the story about how the dog was rescued, but not necessarily reading about bullying. After reading the book I thought about it for a while before deciding to comment. I found myself getting caught up in the author's reflections on his youth, his relationship with his parents, and how being bullied influenced the adult he became. I also loved the way he cared for and rescued the dog. I would recommend this book.
