I just could not get into the rhythm and mood of this film. It was well acted and directed, and Harrelson and Bale are wonderful, but it was such a depressing story. I lived in a small town growing up, and there was never too much socially going on. I can't say that everyone always dragged their guns out, but I knew a lot of people had guns in there homes. There is a lot of drugs and shooting in the film, just in case you might wonder about youngsters watching this.

Top acting by a stellar cast, portraying some brutal and dysfunctional people set in an small town, five hours from the isolated Appalachian Mountains, with their own code and conduct.
Sometime hard to watch, but worth the journey if you have the stomach for it.

Great action flick. Good vs evil and good wins.

Plodding thin plot. A movie made for fast-forwarding. Lots of brutal action.

Slow burn of a story that just moved a little too slow for me to get into it. Stellar cast but ultimately they couldn't make up for the dragging plot.

Not a typical Hollywood ending to this dark movie. Harrelson is absolutely scary.

Yet another Hollywood depiction of small town folks who have guns that are bad or sad people. Ever wonder why this is a consistent narrative? Seems a little too coincidental.

Lousy life, okay movie

Filmed in grimy shades of blue with a town that seems little more than smoky skies and boarded up storefronts, Scott Cooper manages to lift a generic blue collar thriller into something of note thanks in large part to an amazing cast (including Willem Dafoe, Zoe Saldana, and Forest Whitaker) and a score that runs from heavy orchestral passages to Pearl Jam. Perhaps he plays the testosterone card a bit too freely with Bale swinging a rifle like it was his third arm and a snarling Harrelson heading up a pack of thoroughly repulsive backwoodsmen, but when taken as a contemporary American folk tale all that macho chest pounding becomes easier to accept. Cooper may not have reinvented the genre but he certainly contributed something that stands out from the usual crop.

I thought it was great, except for the end. It was sad for sure but I loved the story and the music.

“Rod: Working for a living? Rod: Is it working for a living when I carried my best friend's legs under this arm, and the rest of him under this arm? I saw a xyzzing baby with his xyzzing head cut off! I saw a xyzzing pile of feet in the middle of the street, and I had to clean it up! I gave my xyzzing life for this country. That's not work? And what's it done for me, huh?? What's it xyzzing done for me?!”

Russ:What do I think you should do? Rod:I don't know. Shovel asphalt for the highway department. Sell xyzz shoes. Russ:Come work at the mill. Come work at the mill. I told you Roach would give you a job. Rod: No, man, I'd rather be xyzzing dead. xyzz the mill. Russ: xyzz the mill? I work at the mill, you little xyzzer. It's good enough for me. It was good enough for our dad. Rod: The xyzzing mill killed our dad! Russ: Just don't be... Hey. Just don't be too proud to work for a living. There's nothing wrong with it. What'd you say? Nothing wrong with working for a living.

John: Look, Rodney, go work in the mill.
Like your father and brother.
This isn't a way for you
to make a living. You're a good kid with a good heart.
You can do a lot worse
than living your life
like your brother, believe me.

Rod:I don't want to work
at the xyzz mill, man.
I want to be just like you, John.
