I liked the following so much, from a prior commenter, that I quote: "one of the more self-involved, egocentric and spoiled rotten teenagers on the planet." However, I think that judgement is incorrect. I was charmed (smitten, perhaps) by Laura Dekker from the start of the documentary. She was self-assured, focused, and filled with energy. The film gives only glimpses of her motivation, and shows us moments of her "teenage-brain" when she's being stubborn and a little frustrated. Her voyage was inspiring. It provides a great view of what makes us human.

The film was a bit boring at the beginning, but Laura Dekker was an amazing girl who sailed around the world alone at the age of fourteen.

Dec 29 2016.....I was fascinated by this documentary. I found Laura so confident and capable for such a young age. I guess she had some practice with her early family life. I had to Wiki her to see where she ended up. You must read about her 2009 sail to England. She was one determined teenager. She has been incredibly busy since her trip and has continued with her dream. I was impressed with how she always seemed so upbeat while on her own, and she certainly could entertain herself. I hope to remember to check in on how her life continues to go on, and see what else she accomplishes, although she may choose to hide away from time to time. This DVD reminds me of a book I read about a couple who sailed around the world and ended up living in Canada. (High Endeavours, The Extraordinary Life and Adventures of Miles and Beryl Smeeton)

Compare Ellen MacArthur, who sailed around UK before 16, then was sponsored for solo ocean racing. Now Ellen runs NGO promoting economic improvements. She jumped from personal accomplishment to public speaker. Spoiler alert : last scene is worrying. This independent young woman chooses a young man withdrawn into his phone games. He's not interested in sailing. Why did she invite the barnacle ? Her choice signals fledgling social skills.

Although youthful sailor Laura Dekker had a long history of sailing experience she demonstrated a lot of guts and perseverance in this superbly filmed circumnavigation. I would have appreciated more explanation of the operation of her ketch-rigged sailboat such as the self-steering arrangement, the solar panel electricity supply, and water storage. The other message from this documentary is the heavy toll of yachting on Dekker's family. The simple animated maps were effective in making her route clear and landfalls identified. Her yacht "Guppy", with it round hull and small keel, might have been well suited to sailing the inland waters and canals of Holland but caused it to roll relentlessly. To get a sense of the longest legs taking over 3 months each view the Extended Scene titled "Sailing".

Except that this was about one of the more self-involved, egocentric and spoiled rotten teenagers on the planet, this would have been an entertaining movie. The fact that she's a pill dulled any degree of enjoyment.

Talk about an incredible journey! I found this account of a teenager sailing solo around the world inspiring and absorbing. This is a documentary, not fiction. There are a few expletives here and there, but otherwise the film would be inspiring for older children. Watch the extended footage in the extras to get a sense of what it's like to sail alone. Highly recommended.

The competence, courage, perseverance, maturity, and sanity displayed by this young lady is awesome. Words cannot do justice. In the bonus material, loved the long takes of her repairing a sail, and arriving in port on St. Maarten at end of journey.

Maidentrip challenges our social norms about what is old enough to set off on a solo sailing voyage around the world. What struck me most about Laura Dekker is her confidence from a young age. I wonder what Laura's life will look like in her adulthood...will she struggle or will she be free of the trappings of material possessions and money because she eschewed that in her formative years? As we seniorize, we pose the what ifs to ourselves, such as, what if? If only I'd taken that solo sailing trip at age 14, for example. Here is a person who commanded her life to her goal. Maidentrip is entertaining and thought-provoking. She will inspire people to think big.
