Contrary to the thumbnail outline above, the silver coffee pot is stolen from the Railway Hotel in Cardiff, Wales. On the same train as the purloined pot, a travelling acting group is bringing the jinxed "Macbeth" play to the Royal Theatre in Cardiff. Is the theft of the pot and the macabre death of its silversmith just the start of mishaps? Once again, the author, Edward Marston, has assembled a wide cast of suspects for Detective Inspector Robert Colbeck and Sergeant Victor Leeming to winnow using tried-and-true police investigative procedures. Will Colbeck finally propose to his sweetheart Madeleine Andrews?
Winifred Tomkins had decided a unique silver coffeepot in the shape of a locomotive will make her the envy of her friends and enemies. The silversmith delivering it is murdered and the coffeepot stolen. Winifred doesn't care about the dead silversmith. She wants her coffeepot. Can Colbeck and Leeming sort out the multitude of suspects to find the murderer and the stolen coffeepot? Another interesting puzzle for the Railway Detective to solve.
Plenty of red herrings before the surprising murderer is discovered.
