Haunting and detailed account of "the one that got away." Not just one person's story, but the sad truth of many.

Austria or Poland were the best countries to seek refuge. The grandparents of Sarah Wildman sought proper refuge in Austria. Other population’s victim of genocide must study the manner in which the Jews of the Nazi time period and generations "rebounded" and obtained favor both locally and abroad.

Who is the woman that her grandmother only describes as her grandfather, Karl's, "true love"? Why did she not come to the US with Karl when he fled Nazi-occupied Vienna in 1938? Wildman finds a series of letters that Valerie Scheftel--Valy--wrote to Karl, imploring his help in escaping, and decides to figure out who this woman was and what became of her. Through her extensive travels and years of researching, she realizes that things were not exactly as Karl had described them in his narrative. Anyone who is intrigued by the personal histories of families broken apart and destroyed during WWII in and around Germany, what really happened to the people in their own words, and the process of searching the documents and interviewing survivors will be enthralled with this book. It is not an easy read, as made obvious by the subject matter, but well worth the time investment.

An amazing story, and it covers many things that aren't commonly discussed in Holocaust stories - how hard it was to emigrate, the challenges people experienced when they did make it to America, etc. Well worth reading.
