this koreeda movie is less fraught than the more recent ‘shoplifting family,’ very thought provoking with natural and lovely boys in the center of a horrible situation

A very unique family story about two Japanese families who got their sons exchanged at birth but only to find out about it 6 years later and how they deal with it....Full of charisma and innocence pulling us through a emotional journey from start to end. This film will make you both laugh and cry.

This movie gives pause for thought. Having to make the decision between the son you've raised for six years and the son you learn is biologically yours is any parent's nightmare. I have considered the painful decision for the first time ever, and it rips my heart apart. What would you do?

What would you do if you found out that one of your children actually belonged to another family, and that one of their children, a complete stranger to you, was your real child? What would you do? Would you keep the child you've only ever known, or would you want the child that is biologically yours? How would it affect your decision if the two children have been brought up with very different values, and expectations - differences that you find difficult and/or distasteful. How do children cope with an issue like this? What do you tell them? How should it be explained? Do they get a say in the matter? How are they to be taken through such a quagmire? And what makes a child yours anyway - is it nature or is it nurture? The questions in this dilemma are endless, and the sensitive, careful, heart wrenching depiction of the struggle faced by two very different families to answer those questions will bring you to tears.

Such an amazing and difficult film about two children switched at birth and how two families are forced to respond to the mistake. Really loved the story and raw the story was.

To father a child, that's easy. To be a daddy, man that's exosting and time sonsuming. I like this movie.

Tearful yet heart-warming Japanese cinematic perfection.

What at first I thought would be a sterile movie, slow going, turned into a thought provoking look at how people bring their own history to a situation flung onto them, and turn it into anything.
I'm still thinking about it days later.

like father like son, until the son isn't of the father.

is it nature or nurture that calls the relationships into question?

another great film by Hirokazu

please spare us from a Spielberg remake.
