To father a child, that's easy. To be a daddy, man that's exosting and time sonsuming. I like this movie.

What at first I thought would be a sterile movie, slow going, turned into a thought provoking look at how people bring their own history to a situation flung onto them, and turn it into anything.
I'm still thinking about it days later.

like father like son, until the son isn't of the father.

is it nature or nurture that calls the relationships into question?

another great film by Hirokazu

please spare us from a Spielberg remake.

This is one of those films that could have easily descended into over-sentimental madness, but it was done so well. A great film. The only thing that bothered me slightly was the polar opposites in the characters of the fathers. I get the message, but a little more subtly couldn't have hurt. Regardless, this film was very well acted and beautifully shot. The actors did a stellar job. I hope to check out more movies by this filmmaker.

This is a 2013 Japanese drama directed by Hirokazu Koreeda (是枝裕和).
The Japanese title literally means "And he's become a father.(そして父になる)"
And it really means it!
One day, the couple learns that their biological son "Ryusei(琉晴)" was accidentally switched with "Keita(慶多)" after birth.
After DNA tests prove the error, they must now make a life-changing decision to either keep "Keita", the boy they raised as their own son, or switch him for their biological son.
Actually, the baby-switching incident was NOT an acccident but one of the nurses did it on purpose.
The performances of both kid-actors are superb, and the story is sensitively written and smartly directed.
The director uses familiar-seeming elements to tell a thought-provoking story.
Gripping, profoudly involving and ultimately refreshing, this film is one of those rare films that keep you totally engaged.
This film even moved Steven Spielberg, who has obtained a right to remake it.

This is an excellent family drama from contemporary Japanese cinema. The two families involved are so unlike, and this adds to the drama when they found out their 6-yr old sons were switched at birth. To remedy to problem they took their time to ease the kids into the respective families, but had to face numerous challenges. With no sex and no violence, the film held my attention - every minute of it. In Japanese with subtitles.

A human & realistically written story - as in life... people are not always noble or altruistic initially ... but if they ultimately rise-up to the occasion ... well then I guess that is the true measure of character.

Adorable kids switched at birth and raised in totally different family settings and later both families got to face the hard truth of the mistakenly consequences. Precious lessions in parenting in a diverse socio-economical demographics and family traditions. Heart-warming drama.

A good movie though not as good as 'The Other Son' , where an Arab and Israeli kid are switched at birth.
