Truffaut's semi-autobiographical treatment of character development in a cycle of five films stands the test of time---in fact passes the test with flying colors. Using the same actor across a real time period of about 15 years is an unparalleled film experiment. We see the Parisian world of the 50s, 60s and 70s through the eyes of a character and a director that are keen observers. From childhood to adulthood, we watch Paris change around Doinel. This is the gem of French New Wave cinema.....and even though this style of film-making is long gone--it's effects are visible in the best modern films. It's the complete antithesis of big budget, empty Hollywood productions that fill 90% of screens now.
