I can't get into books that don't have text. That probably says something about my psyche... but this book was not for me.

Deceivingly simple in it's design, be sure to take the time to discover all the hidden nighttime creatures in Boyd's story.

A lovely picture book. With simple line drawings contrasting with the colour pictures in the flashlight beam, as well as little hidden peek-a-boo cutouts, this is a great book to cuddle up with a young child and share its discoveries. Recommended for one on one sharing.

Shine a light on the denizens of the dark! Night fills each page with the darkest black, hiding almost all colour and leaving only chalk outlines. As a little boy walks away from his campsite he reveals the various things of the forest with his flashlight. Some creatures sleep, but many of them are active, and fortunately friendly. When the boy stumbles, the animals want to have fun, so they pick up the light to reveal this curious creature among them. With so little colour, there is a strong sense of the difference between our regular vision and our night vision. Even when it does make an appearance, the hues are quite simple. Other than this, there are some cut out openings which are seemingly without a purpose, but otherwise don't hinder this wordless story suitable for toddlers.
