Elena lives in the poor Russian countryside. Her father is dead and her brothers have been forced into the Tsar's army. Her mother is dying, and there is no food. But then a train arrives carrying untold wealth, a cornucopia of food, and a noble family; a family that includes Ekaterina, a girl of Elena's age. When the two girls meet, an adventure is set in motion that includes mistaken identity, a monk locked in a tower, a prince traveling incognito, and Baba Yaga, the witch of Russian folklore.

I really enjoyed the story. Maguire is obviously an excellent storyteller. I didn't like the witch's voice, but all the others were distinct.

I loved this book! The narration is amazing (it won an Audie Award) and the story is funny, exciting, and full of wonder.

A "Prince & the Pauper" story mixed with Russian folklore & myths and fun characters. Baba Yaga was a favorited, as were the Matryoshka dolls and the firebird. There are many colourful elements throughout to keep one's interest.
The story of the importance of family, the meaning of friendship, honor, commitment and putting one's personal desires aside for larger needs is well told. The legends & myths are intertwined with the real life of the characters and fantasy blend well with reality.
The downside is that the characters are rather good and sweet. Even the bad guys are good, which means that there's not much tension or suspense to pull you deep into the story. I ended up not being very invested in the story or its outcome.
