Based on the extensive historical archive of Quarry Bank Mill in Cheshire and portraying the lives of real people, this powerful scripted drama series depicts Britain at a time when the industrial revolution is changing the country beyond recognition. In the 1830s, children as young as nine work twelve-hour shifts in the mills, and the new class of mill-owning families prosper. But the so-called 'white slaves of England' are about to take their lives into their own hands.

This was a great first season! it was disturbing and exhilirating and looks at the Upstairs/Downstairs view of class and work really honestly and with working heroes. Bravo!
Great acting, fabulous sets and costumes and marvelous camera work.
Full Five Stars!

Great actors. Compelling stories -- everyone at the mercy of the employer.

It helps to be interested in the era of Industrial Revolution history of England & reading more than the DVD cover to understand the importance of the time period. Fact based events at the Quarry Bank Mill, still is use near Chester. Significant, regarding lack of child labor laws, 12 hour work day, glutinous porridge dumped onto bare hands for sustenance, hazardous conditions & slave-like treatment. Bleak film & surroundings, despite the beauty of the area (when in foliage.) My gr-grandmother & family worked a similar mill 1890's Rochester NY, giving me better visualization.
