It's hard to call anything about the Holocaust as "sweet," but this graphic novel is, and it's the perfect introduction to little ones about the Holocaust and persecution of the Jews. Beautifully done. Highly recommend.

Hidden is a poignant graphic-novel for young readers that begins as a grandmother, (Dounia), tells her granddaughter the story of her survival during the Holocaust. This book effectively conveys the fear and confusion of young Dounia as she experiences escalating acts of persecution and violence in Nazi-occupied France. One night her family's apartment is raided and Dounia's parents are taken away while she is carefully hidden away in a clothing bureau. Dounia is rescued by an apartment neighbor and smuggled to the countryside and must deal with the uncertainty and grief caused by the abduction of her parents.

I believe that Hidden is an excellent resource for young readers to begin a conversation about Holocaust history and it consequences. The artwork is simple and has a picture-book quality, but doesn't distract from the seriousness of the subject matter. The story is gut-wrenching and illustrates the scope of the Holocaust by telling a personal story that connects with the reader. This is great example of using the graphic-novel format as learning tool—it teaches about the effects of war, especially on children and may inspire kids to speak out against racism and injustice.

Short but very effective story. It deals with the inexplicable in a way that’s accessible to all ages. The story and art are simple enough but take nothing away from the impact. Highly recommend!

Vibrant, touching, heartbreaking. This sweet junior graphic novel packs a punch. Dounia Cohen opens up to her granddaughter recalling her story of survival as a young girl in France during the Holocaust. Definitely a welcome addition to the literature that continues to educate readers young and old about what happened to everyday people. Hidden manages to show both the dark and light. The terror, sadness, and fear, but also the beauty and generosity of neighbors and strangers. One of the most powerful parts is in the end where it is quietly revealed how complex and difficult it is for Dounia, our survivor and heroine, to talk about her story

Don't let the fact that this is a "children's graphic novel" fool you--this is a powerful book that provides an impactful and touching depiction of what it was like to live through one of the most terrible events in human history. It has the ability to affect children and adults alike, and is a nice supplement to the core literature on the subject that is often presented to students. Superb artwork rounds out the package.

A Grandmother shares her experience during the Holocaust, making this book a nice introduction to an ugly time for kids.
