While I enjoyed this read very much for the action-driven plot focused on main character Aya, I did finish feeling a little cheated on backstory. There are so many interesting sub-plots (the Drivers, genetic manipulation, other families that must live in the wild) that are barely touched upon. I wish Simmons would have expanded this into a trilogy and given us more history and nuance. Still worth reading though for Aya's great strength and an exciting story!

This book was written in an oddly childish tone, which I find is very common in many YA novels, which is a disappointment. The violence felt a little unnecessary at parts, imo. An okay read.
