"The island (Hispanolia) was one country for a long time. . .Oh, we don't share everything. Over there (Dominican Republic) they have a thing for Christopher Columbus that's pretty embarrassing. No one else in the hemisphere likes the motherf***er."
This debut novel (don't think Love in the Time of Cholera) from Haitian writer Dimitry Elias Leger is part love triangle and part disaster story. Set during the Haitian earthquake of 2010 and its aftermath, Leger offers a rich portrait of a country too often defined by its tragedies. One of the characters meets a Hollywood actor who comes down to do aid work, which I can't help but thinking was inspired by Sean Penn. The title is bitterly ironic. Edwidge Danticat is another Haitian writer worth checking out.
