Probably like most people, I only knew about General Marshall as the author of the Marshall Plan for stabilizing Europe after WWII. This well-researched book presents an unvarnished portrait of George Marshall's life and persona. It turns out that Marshall was not the sole author of the Marshall Plan, but certainly was instrumental in getting its approval and in its implementation. Like every leader, Marshall was not successful in all his efforts, but this book lays out an astonishing number of tasks that he undertook that required a genuinely unique personality and skill set. The authors help us to appreciate Marshall's organizational skills in taking a woefully inadequate 1940 armed forces from 275,000 to over 8 million men. They also let us empathize with the Herculean task that Marshall faced to keep the WWII alliance together given the very stressful wartime conditions and the bigger-than-life personalities of FDR, Churchill, Stalin and all the prima donna generals and admirals. This biography is an excellent read.

Easy read, honest, informative, yet fair. I came away still impressed with the man and his accomplishments. 'Paper-pushers' are sometimes more important then they're given credit for.

A right wing screed. If one did not know better one would read this waste of time and conclude the US lost the war.
