SUMMARY: Sydney the lamb has been born in the new year. Her parents and the shepherdess, Zhi, teach Sydney all there is to know about being a sheep and part of the flock. Sydney becomes over-curious at times, goes places she shouldn't, and gets into trouble quite often. But after a big storm, it is Sydney who steps up with good ideas and helpfulness to bring water back to the land.

ILLUSTRATIONS: The illustrations are soft and colorful with lots of detail. Older children will especially enjoy the subtle nuances of the pictures.

THE GOOD: This is a wonderful picture book concept created to teach children about the Chinese Zodiac. A+ for creativity and nice illustrations. There is also humor and character interest throughout the book.
THE NOT AS GOOD: The writing itself was not well done. There are many cliche and slang phrases as well as awkward wording. Little Sydney says, "I want to explore off the beaten path." I don't know any little kids who talk like that. Sydney also does not personify the personality of the Zodiac sheep well in my opinion. "They tend to be cooperative, creative, shy, and go with the flow." Sydney is creative, but not the least bit shy or one to stick with the flock.

AGE RECOMMENDATION: Grades 1- 4 This would be a great book alongside the others in the series to introduce children to the Chinese Zodiac, especially in the classroom--both for group and independent reading.
