If you are planning a trip to L.A. (or even if you're not) and are interested in it's history, this is a great book to start with and an easy read. It gives an overview of the events and people who shaped the city through short, interesting essays (I really enjoyed reading about the old streetcar system that shaped the city and it's sprawl) and then in the back it provides several driving or walking tours you can take on your own with stops along the way. It offers up a lot of options that are not the usual tourist fare and some, like a listing of cemeteries and the famous people who are buried there, that are!
