Patron bobbles1 is right on when it comes to "Odd Man Out". Director Carol Reed really never made anything but excellent films. Don't miss his classic with Orson Wells, "The Third Man". In Odd Man Out" James Mason may be giving his finest film performance. The second DVD has much more background on Mason and his Irish Heritage. If your a film lover, as I am, then don't miss "Odd Man Out"! They truly don't make masterpieces like this very often!

I'm Johnny McQeen and I just got shot doing a bank robbery with my guys. Our getaway car sort of took off without me. I got shot in the left arm and couldn't hold on the moving vehicle. They never came back to get me. Now the police are looking everywhere and won't give up until they either arrest me or have my dead body. So I'm on my own, hoping to get to the harbor where a ship will take me away from the city. But the ship doesn't sail until nighttime and I have to it on foot with everyone looking for me. Try doing that when everyone is looking for you and you got a bullet wound that needs doctoring. It's hours of hiding and moving, hiding and moving. There's a lot of blood loss from that bullet and it hurts me, a lot. Why did that man at the bank have to have a go at me? He should have recognized that it was me with the gun and just backed away. No one would have faulted him for playing it safe. Stupid to be shot for money that isn't your own. God how the hours pass so slowly when you can't move about freely. Blood loss is causing me to fantasize about the meaning of my life. Why does a man seem to learn at the end of his life the things that he should have been taught at the beginning when it could do him some real good? Now it's nighttime and i can hear the ship loudly sound its' imminent departure, with or without me. I'm so disoriented, so weak, so tired, and no longer seem to move my legs. Suddenly, my woman Kathleen has found me and is trying to help me walk. That's right I remember now. We planned to leave together. But that plan was made in a different life than the one I'm living now, before I was shot. I ask her "Is it far?" She sees the army of policemen approaching us and tells me "It's too far". I never knew she had a gun in her coat pocket. But she did and she used it to end all our worries about sailing away from this Earthly life. She shot me dead and then herself. She wants so badly to be with me that she is willing to give up her own? There is price of admission to the world beyond this one it requires a payment in how we live this earthly one. No man ever had a woman give more for her man than she did for me. Maybe God will forgive us.

A young James Mason at his best. Love at its most loyal. Fighting for a good cause by good people but in ways that are wrong. A police officer seeking justice but undermining the sympathy we have for the good cause with his integrity and compassion. A dark movie in every way but it will stay in my mind for a long time to come.
