Isla is a lonely girl who moves to Hobart with her mother and brother to try and better their lives. It's not really working until they meet Bo, a crewman on an Antarctic supply ship, the Nella Dan, who shares stories about his adventures with them--his travels, bird watching, home in Denmark, and life on board the ship. Isla is struggling to learn what truly matters and who to trust; and this modern Viking is searching to understand his past and find a place in this world for himself. Though their time together is short, it's enough to change the course of both their lives. And what they give each other might mean they can both eventually find their way home.

Favel Parrett’s sparse but evocative and almost poetic prose takes us into the lives of a 13 year-old girl, Isla, living with her single mother and brother in Hobart, Tasmania and a Norwegian seaman, Bo, who stays in their house on his way to and from Antarctica in the ship, the Nella Dan. Through his stories, Bo gives Isla a window into other worlds which, in a sense, is exactly what this book does for the reader. The story is told in fragments, sometimes by Isla, sometimes by Bo, with each chapter giving us glimpse of their lives at different times and places - in Hobart, Norway, Antarctica and at sea. While this chopping and changing caused me some confusion at times I was rewarded, in the end, by a vivid and enduring picture of the lives of those who were involved in, and touched by, Antarctic exploration.
