A compassionate portrait of the gentle, thoughtful warden and precentor of Barchester Cathedral, Mr. Septimus Harding. Loved and appreciated by all with whom he works, Harding lives an ordered, regular life in his protected religious environment. Then a young reformer feels he has uncovered a mismanagement of funds and Harding is held to blame. The accusation comes as a shock to Harding himself and the cathedral community. It then comes to wider notice when the cause is taken up by a national newspaper.

I never thought I could care about old men in a 19th century hospital or about something as trivial to us these days as a mini-drama over the hospital warden's income. David Shaw-Parker narrates this classic and he brings out the humor in the situation, infuses the story with energy and seems so delighted and gleeful over every little incident and character. This is a real pleasure to listen to.
