Hmm. I wanted to like this book. It came across my lists as I was searching for horror; I'm not the greatest fan of zombie lit but I thought I'd give it a try. It's not horror. It's a coming-of-age hero tale with the zombie apocalypse as a backdrop. The entire premise of tattooing the "infected" with a plus sign on their hand is interesting. The scariest moment happens within the first 30 pages. After that, it is an adventure novel with its own formulaic villains, scenarios, and plot arcs. It's predictable in so many points. Is it horrible? No. It just doesn't break any ground is fairly pulp-y in its formula and prose. I did find myself reading quickly to "finish" it as fast as possible; I didn't want to leave it behind but I couldn't wait to finish it.

Well... I wouldn't say it was a horrible story. Though as far as zombies stories goes, this one was pretty lame. A previous comment mentions the fact that you don't really see many zombie attacks in this story; It builds up the "world" but then you only really see human interactions throughout.

For me, there were so many things that just didn't make sense about the actual zombies, were they still alive humans but taken over by a fungus in the brain or were they actually dead? (and then being reanimated by said fungus in the brain) How can they kill them by just slicing their throat and if they were dead the how would you have blood spurting out of a zombie that has been animated for nearly two decades (dead flesh does rot)?

I think the author in this area failed his audience, don't get me wrong the writing is fairly good and the actual story itself is "meh" (this main character is unusually lucky throughout; more supernaturally than reanimated dead). He explains characters that 'could' be infected (the positives) with a brain fungus due to exposure but then how does this thing lie dormant for up to twenty years and then over a few days start eating away the brain enough where they change.

He also explains how 'thirsty' these mindless dead get as well, but then every safe place has water as a barrier/wall against them. I mean if they wanted to quench an unending thirst (like their hunger for flesh, not even being picky) wouldn't all of the zombies end up drowning in water trying to? Nothing but floating dead.

These are just little details that destroy any sort of cohesion in the over all story...

Not enough zombies. Mostly about a guy trying to survive against other humans. The romance was utterly bland. I don't know if it's because I was going into the book expecting gore and blood and the undead, but this book did not meet my expectations.

As a fan of the Walking Dead series. I was curious and ended up enjoying this book.
