Beautifully written. The author strings the reader along, slowly adding details from McCall's early life. A very satisfying book, illuminating much of the 60's and the country's strife with the Vietnam war. Highly recommended.

One of my favorite books. Excellent writing, you fall in love with the characters and his writing draws you in and keeps you attached until the end.

One of my favorites - started slow and then I couldn't put it down. I found myself thinking about it for weeks afterward.

A very good read, that gets better as it develops; author could have condensed the first 150 pages.

Another Pat Conroy novel with everything we've come to expect. Abusive, alcoholic fathers, loving and self-sacrificing (but far from perfect)mothers, suicides and mental illness, and plenty of angst from the past and hope for the future. Great settings in Rome and the South Carolina low country. Love it, love it, love it!!
