This Toots & the Maytals album from the mid 60s captures Jamaican music just as it was evolving from ska toward rocksteady and ultimately reggae. You might call it proto-reggae. It is definitely Jamaican, yet the influence of late 50s and early 60s American pop and R&B is hard to miss.
