"From his heyday to the present moment, Al Capone's life has gripped the public imagination, and his gangster persona has been immortalized in the countless movies and books inspired by his exploits. But who was the man behind the legend? Capone loved to tell tall tales that perpetuated his mystique; newspapers loved him and frequently embellished or fabricated stories about him to sell copies. While some remember him as fundamentally kind and good, others speak of how frightening he was, a vicious, cold-blooded killer...Writing with exclusive access to Capone's descendants, Deirdre Bair finally gets at the truth behind this eternally fascinating man, who was equal parts charismatic mobster, doting father, and calculating monster."-- Provided by publisher.

This book is about Al Capone's relationships with his family members, gang members, the police, prosecutors, politicians, fellow inmates, newspaper reporters and the public. Since his "business" success depended on relationships, this book provides valuable insight into how Al Capone operated his "business" empire. It has been estimated that the Capone gang's sales revenue was equivalent in today's dollars to a ballpark figure of a billion dollars per year before the onset of the Great Depression. It still remains a mystery why Al Capone showed up in court to face tax evasion charges. IMHO, I would rate "Capone: His Life, Legacy, and Legend" at 4.0 stars.

Finding details on Capone's voice, his sound as he talked, turns out to be a hard thing as there is no known recording of it. The kind of detail Capone: Life Legacy and Legend provides in all areas of his life shines some light on his melodic tones when the writer notes on page 127, "His manner was suave, his voice gently modulated." That's quite the contrast with Robert De Niro's Capone in The Untouchables where he screams in a distinctly unsuave way. So the point is, a reader may discover characteristics of Capone in this book that shed a brighter light on his life than one thought or knew.

this book was good, and it is in the limelight because it is a newly published book. It had some new information for me, but in my opinion, and if a gangsterologist, one may only need to read Young al Capone and Get Capone, for most of the same information. Those two books are pretty much gangsterology staples, of that specific time and in regards to Capone as well.
