"Mary and O'Neil frequently marveled at how, of all the lives they might have led, they had somehow found this one together. When they met at the Philadelphia high school where they'd come to teach, each had suffered a profound loss that had not healed."--Jacket.

It’s hard to believe this is his first book. It’s written so well. The characters feel fully fleshed out and you truly care about them. The descriptions are wonderful and pull you in.

Highly recommend this if you’ve read his other material.

Beautifully written, emotionally evocative. Builds slowly to an unexpected crescendo. Most definitely worth reading

A touching examination of how tragedy in young adulthood impacts a couple as they meet, wed, raise children and journey through their lives. Justin Cronin is a gifted literary author and quite different in this novel than his later work, The Passage, which is also excellent but in a totally different genre, "vampire" science fiction. I loved them both!
