Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are?

What separates your mind from that of an animal? Is it the ability to design tools; a sense of self; or the grasp of past and future? In recent decades these claims have eroded, or even been disproven outright, by a revolution in the study of animal cognition. De Waal explores both the scope and the depth of animal intelligence, offering a firsthand account of how science has stood traditional behaviorism on its head by revealing how smart animals really are, and how we've underestimated their abilities for too long.

I really wanted to know more about the emotional intelligence of animals, but this book is a much more scientific study of instinct. Additionally, he's a primate specialist, so he relies on ape studies more than anything else and I feel that ground is well-trod. I didn't make it all the way through it... the organization is a mess and you never quite know where it's going (in the audio book, at least). Additionally, the narrator has an annoying quality of taking each sentence up, then ending in a whisper. I think I'm going to try When Elephants Weep and see if I can get any closer to what I'm after...
