I was surprised how beautiful this film is. I read the book years ago and didn’t care for it that much but I liked the film. It is considered horror but it is a new genre of horror where the collapse of energy threatens lives all over the world. It focuses on the lives of two sisters in the PNW who must fend for themselves without modern conveniences (oh! The horror) but it really is hand to mouth living while months and months go by and the sisters become more feral. Two warnings: it contains a rape scene and a evisceration of a pig.

At first glance, I saw it misleading that this title was marketed as a “Thriller” as I rarely noticed myself feeling the intense sensations of suspense that a Thriller typically produces. Yet, later, I lay awake amid COVID-19 Social Distancing in tingling fear response to the tiniest of suspicious noises!

It was well-done in the technical sense, both well-acted (It’s difficult for me to hate something Ellen Page has performed in) and visually attractive. The high-impact scenes were... well,..impactful…when they happened and prompted the wonder, “If the trauma of an apocalypse really happened how would people behave?”

I chop the ending up either to allegory or isolation insanity depending on my mood. I fully admit, I was quite irritated with the story in those final moments. The plot did not lead us anywhere. But, perhaps such events would not lead us anywhere but to a new beginning we must set out for???

The story just wasn't common sense, the characters didn't seem to be real. Many people today live with out electricity. Often in large cities there are black outs for hours, or storms that remove power for days. People don't crumble so easy, and in the long run they pull together.

The thought of living without electricity is unfathomable. Humans need it. This movie shows what can happen when its not available and in a world like this, things can change pretty quickly.

It's important to note that this is not a suspense genre film; it is a drama genre film. Nevertheless, the pacing is mostly taught and engrossing. I was generally involved and sympathetic towards the characters, who are real and who are not perfect, and who have emotions and goals of their own to keep you connected to them. The characters are dynamic, they suffer, and they change. The film is emotionally involving and at times pulls with some pretty impressive force. Good movies are not about action or violence; they are about the effects that they have on your internal world. This is a good movie.

in some of the early scenes, such as when the trio are walking into a shopmart, evan rachel wood looks like Page's mother, she is so much taller than the Canadian actress. Wood spends much time practicing her ballet in front of multiple mirrors. I don't think the film got what the book was saying. A missed independent -film opportunity. Not bad, but just no oomph to it, at all. It was nice they slept with his body, in the forest, after being unable to save him (after a chainsaw accident).

A different view of a possible 'apocalypse', more 'real' instead of zombies appearing. Some may find it slow, but it's more about learning to survive and supporting each other. Not sure it was totally a smart thing to do at the end.

Good drama that focuses on how one family deals with a massive power outage and isolation.

What's happening in town?
-People are getting sick. There's no water filtration. I thought you'd died when you stopped coming to town.
-No. We ran out of gas.
Everyone's run out of gas. There's no gas, there's no electricity, there's no transportation, there's no phones, there's no Internet. It's the wild fucking west out there.
-Do they have any idea what caused it all?
There's rumors. There are theories, like mad theories, but...

A crisis like this doesn't always bring out the best side of people. It reveals character, you're right there. Yes, it reveals character. I tell you, you know? It's people wanting something for nothing
is what got us into this mess in the first place.

You're gonna pass with flying colors, pumpkin.
-You have to say that because you're my father.
True. But I'm also right.

I understand. There is people in town who still check their mailbox every morning even though there hasn't been mail in forever.
-It's a fugue state.
It's like a what?
-Oh, it's like when you forget everything. And you're in this weird state. You don't realize anything
that's happened to you before. You seem normal in every other way.

No, I don't think any baby should be unwanted. ... I want it. I don't think I can lose anything else, Nell. ... I don't think the kid is responsible for the parents' actions. Anyway, how could this baby
even be mine? What does that mean? It's its own person.

There are many rumors, some suggest a terrorist targeting our power supply... It seems
at least 300 million people are now without power. Back up generators... No word yet... Millions are still without power. No subways, elevators, airports... So if vaccine refrigeration is of particular concern in the capital... has asked everyone to stay home. Boil your water and conserve your food...

Alright, how long have human beings been around?
-What?
Seriously... How long have human beings been around on earth? 100... 200,000 years. Right? How long have we had electricity? Right. You see what I'm saying? This, all this. This is all we have. We have each other. We have plenty of food. We know how to get more. It's just not safe here anymore.
===
No. If you've gotta go, you gotta go.
-But Eva, we're the only family either one of us has. We need to stick together.
Hey, hey, hey. We both made our choices. Bye, Nelly. Hey, I'm always gonna be your sister.
